The Columbus Day Gift Project raises funds through the sale of the song Columbus Day. All profits from the sale of this recording are gifted to Rethinking Schools, an organization committed to education for social justice.
Singer/songwriter Dan Gonzalez founded the Columbus Day Gift Project on the belief that music can effect social change. The goals of the project are:
> to increase awareness around the lasting implications of the genocide and oppression initiated by Columbus upon reaching the Americas in 1492
> to use the Columbus Day holiday to encourage a culture of giving in ways that support social change, as opposed to a culture that celebrates conquest and imperialistic ideals
> to provide financial and curricular support to educational organizations working to empower students to become thoughtful, compassionate, and tolerant members of society.
